What Makes Kalakan's Basque Music So Exciting?

The music of Kalakan, the band, comes from deep in the traditional Basque psyche with the group coming from the northern Basque Country composed of Jamixel Bereau, Xan Errotabehere and Thierry Biscary (2013). They meld simple vocals, yet rich harmonies and percussive instruments (pandereta, tobera, ttun-ttun) into arrangements that are deep layers of sonic excitement. What was not captured in the video is their txalaparta (specialized Basque music device of wood or stone). Viewers can hear Xan's txistu skills (Basque flute) and atabal taller drum. They have collaborated and toured Europe with pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque, and they became a worldwide sensation when they joined Madonna during her MDNA Tour.
