Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the country. It is also considered the southernmost city in the world. It is located in a wide bay on the south coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. The Argentine government recognized Ushuaia as the capital of Tierra del Fuego in 1904. It is approximately 1,100 km off the coast of Antarctica and is the main port of departure for tourist and scientific expeditions. The average annual temperature of the area remains in the range of 0 to 10 °C. The original settlement was founded by British missionaries in the late 19th century. A railway, known as the Train at the End of the World, was also built here. It is the southernmost railway line in the world. Tourist attractions include Tierra del Fuego National Park and Lapataia Bay.
