Der historische Ortskern der Stadt
Der historische Ortskern der Stadt Hattingen mit seinen fast 150 mittelalterlichen Fachwerkhäusern ist ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel der Bewohner des Ruhrgebiets. Hier kann man sich an den alten windschiefen Gebäuden erfreuen, sowie auch bei den zahlreichen gastronomischen Betrieben verweilen.
Zu den interessantesten Bauwerken zählen wohl die St. Georgs-Kirche mit seiner nach Südwesten geneigten Kirchturmspitze, das alte Rathaus, und das Bügeleisenhaus, das seinen Namen durch seine eigenwillige Form erhielt.
Entlang der Stadtmauer am Bruchtorturm findet man dann noch ein aussergewöhnliches Kunstwerk der Neuzeit, die Eisenmänner des polnischen Bildhauers Zbigniew Frączkiewicz, von denen es 15 Stück gab, und als Denkmal auf Zeit in der ehemaligen Henrichshütte aufgebaut waren. Die drei von Sponsoren übernommenen Eisenmänner sollen an den Kampf um den Erhalt des Stahlstandortes erinnern.
Einen vierten und sehr viel kleineren Eisenmann findet man dann noch am alten Rathaus, direkt neben dem Pranger.

The historic center of Hattingen, with its nearly 150 medieval half-timbered houses, is a popular tourist destination for the inhabitants of the Ruhr. Here you can enjoy the old ramshackle buildings, and also stay at the many dining establishments.
Among the most interesting buildings probably include the St. George's Church with its spire inclined to the southwest, the old town hall, and the iron house, which got its name from its distinctive shape.
Along the walls on Bruchtor-tower you then can find an extraordinary work of art in modern times, the iron men of the Polish sculptor Zbigniew Frączkiewicz , of which there were 15 pieces, and were built as a monument to time in the former Henrichshütte. The three acquired by sponsors iron men will remember the struggle to preserve the steel plant.
