Michael Jackson - Billie Jean | New Year 2024 Special (Mega Mix)

Last year’s New Year’s Eve I didn’t do a video special due to personal reasons, however I felt I was obligated to remedy that and come back this New Year’s Eve with a video I wanted to be one of my best. 2023 has been a wild year for my personal evolution of my character and has helped me realize who I want to be by looking back on my experiences, both good and bad, and reflecting on them and improving myself in the process because of it.
So I felt a video mix featuring at least one Billie Jean performance from every year of Michael’s life (where he performed the song) would be fitting. I wanted to showcase what I think is the de facto Billie Jean performance while also including some rare moments, as such moments often bring a lot of identity into his individual performances.

VIDEO:
As I said earlier, I wanted to showcase what I think is the de facto Billie Jean performance while also including some rare moments, as such moments often bring a lot of identity into his individual performances. My goal was to get a video mix that feels easy to follow along with and can even be seen as 1 big performance created by 22 other performances. I used a lot of his later tour and performances because I simply feel that's where his dancing looks the best, however of course I couldn't just do that because then I might as well have made another 'HIStory Tour' focused video mix, so I made sure to create variety between the tours and performances used. But still using what I think is the most appealing and in line with the vibe that the sound mix is giving off, making all of the clips chosen flourish and flow together nicely.
AUDIO:
I used the ‘This Is It’ band rehearsal released by Jonathan Moffett (Michael’s drummer) which I adjusted and extended, and I also added multiple instrumental stems and vocal tracks (both from live shows and studio multitracks) and mixed them, all in order to get a more personalized sound (that I in my own opinion think sounds stronger than the original) that also sounds epic which intensifies his visual performance(s) making him all the more captivating. I chose to make the main deal of the song be the studio acapella because that works the best with every clip and simply sounds the best too. I still made sure to have adlibs spread throughout the performance as it wouldn't be a proper Billie Jean performance without them. For the latter part of the song, I used 'HIStory Tour' adlibs that I feel showcase the style, power and uniqueness of adlibs from that tour.
