Although the first generation of S-Class luxury sedans (and more recently coupes) was officially the W116 generation from the early 1970s, the bloodline for the luxurious limousine models dates back to the 1950s. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class rolls over into a new generation every seven years, on average. And each occasion the S-Class wows the world’s motoring press with advanced new technology – sometimes safety, such as ABS, or comfort, such as ‘Magic Body Control’ introduced in the W222 generation, which is shortly to be superseded. The new W223 series of Mercedes S-Class has gone long on advanced comfort and convenience features, but doesn’t ignore the matter of performance, fuel efficiency and driving dynamics, introducing an inline six-cylinder engine in a mild-hybrid application, plus all-wheel drive and optional rear-wheel steering. Initially, the new S-Class will only be available in S 450 4MATIC variants, the more expensive being the long-wheelbase S 450 L 4MATIC. Other variants will follow later this year.
