How to crochet the Modern Granny Stitch

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to set up and work the 2 row repeated pattern that creates the modern granny stitch.

The Modern Granny Stitch is a beautiful variation of the basic granny stitch.

One row of the 2-row repeat is the basic granny stitch (3 double crochet in the same stitch or space). The basic granny stitch is used in a traditional granny square.

The alternating row of the 2-row repeat is a mirror image of the basic granny stitch. A dc3tog (double crochet 3 together) works right into the top of the granny stitch and vice versa.

The modern granny stitch is easy to remember and easy to work. The resulting fabric has gorgeous drape and fluid movement while still providing plenty of coverage.
