Like the fictional Indiana Jones, Austin Henry Layard has been seen by many historians to be the person who led to the historical discovery of the ancient city of Nimrud in the 1840s. The story of its discovery was one of great historical significance. It brought to us the reality of connecting the past with the future and what it means for us when we forget our historical roots to past civilizations that are lost to us.

Nimrud is located in Iraq, about 30 kilometers south of city of Mosul.  Nimrud is the name attributed to the ancient Assyrian city of Kalhu (the Biblical Calah).  It was a major Assyrian city between approximately 1350 BC and 610 BC.

The city gained fame when king Ashurnasirpal II (883–859 BC) of the Neo-Assyrian Empire (911–605 BC) made it his capital. He built a large palace and temples in the city.

Nineveh, was the capital of the ancient Assyrian Empire. It’s location was on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, across the river from the city of Mosul, Iraq.  The city was first mentioned in ancient texts around 1800 B.C.E., Nineveh became an important trade and religious center.  The walls of Nineveh were a significant part the city, and were rebuilt many times.

The Tal Afar Citadel is located in Tal Afar, a city in the Nineveh Governorate in northwest Iraq. The citadel was built by the Ottoman Empire, however It contains remains dating back to the Assyrian period.

Much of the historic sites in this region were destroyed by ISIL.  Therefore It is vitally important that we remember this history.

In times of war and conflict, cultural identity and cultural heritage become very important. Buildings, monuments and symbols of culture speak of shared roots and values, and they acquire an increased significance to each of us, as we try and understand what faith means in our lives.

The pictures were taken in the year 2005 and 2006 while the 4-23rd SBCT was deployed to Iraq for 16 months.
