In this Physics video lecture in Hindi for class 11 and IIT JEE we explained friction and its types. Basically, friction is of three types, viz., static friction, kinetic or sliding friction and rolling friction. Friction is an electromagnetic force acting between surfaces of two bodies in contact and it reduces or tends to reduce the relative motion of those two bodies. When there is no any relative motion, the friction is known as static friction. When a body slides over another one, the friction acting there is known as sliding or kinetic friction. When a body rolls over another one, the friction acting there is known as rolling friction.
Any of the above mentioned frictional forces is equal to the product of the coefficient of friction (say, coefficient of static friction or coefficient of sliding friction or coefficient of rolling friction, whatever the case may be.) and the normal reaction.
Static frictional force is a self adjusting force.
Frictional force does not depend upon the area in contact.
We also saw that static friction is greater than kinetic friction and kinetic friction is greater than rolling friction.
