Good evening folks! Hello and a warm welcome to the live coverage of the first match of the 3-match T20I series between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium Dambulla. Afghanistan have had a torrid time in Sri Lanka so far. They suffered a 10-wicket defeat in the one-off Test and were whitewashed 3-0 in ODIs.
The tour caravan now moves to Dambulla for a three-match T20I series beginning Saturday (February 17) with the second and third games scheduled for Monday (February 19) and Wednesday (February 21) respectively. Afghanistan will be eyeing ‘total cricket’ in the shortest format to end the tour on a high while hosts Sri Lanka will look to continue their dominance.
This is the road to ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean and the two teams would seek to gather and then sustain momentum heading into the mega-event in June later this year. In the absence of Rashid Khan Afghanistan’s regular skipper in the shortest format Ibrahim Zadran will continue to be the stand-in captain like he had against India in a T20I series last month.
Rashid continues to recover from back surgery he underwent in November last year. Mujeeb Ur Rahman who sustained a hand injury before the start of the ODIs has been ruled out too. Rahmat Shah and Ikram Alikhil have been dropped with Afghanistan including Mohammad Ishaq and Wafadar Momand.
Ibrahim will be aiming to lead from the front with the bat. He’ll have Gurbaz at the top of the order with Hazratullah Zazai Najibullah Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai to follow. Fazalhaq Farooqi will lead the pace-bowling attack which also has the likes of Naveen-ul-Haq Fareed Ahmad and Momand.
Noor Ahmad and Qais Ahmad will take care of the spin-bowling duties. Chameera Out For Sri Lanka left-arm fast bowler Binura Fernando comes in place of the injured Dushmantha Chameera. Chameera has been out of action since injuring his left quadricep in an ODI against Afghanistan.
Sri Lanka have otherwise stuck to the same squad that faced Zimbabwe in January 2024. Binura will be part of a fast-bowling quartet that also has Dilshan Madushanka Nuwan Thushara and Matheesha Pathirana. Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana will shoulder the responsibilities of the spin department with Akila Dananjaya and Kamindu Mendis as back-up options.
The batting unit though has several familiar names with Kusal Mendis Sadeera Samarawickrama Kusal Perera Dhananjaya de Silva Charith Asalanka Angelo Mathews Pathum Nissanka and Dasun Shanaka all members of the squad.
