Managing the Project Team is different than Developing Project team and it's done during the Monitoring and Control Process group.
Since it's done in Monitoring and Control process group it's focused on measuring and controlling the project to the Project management Plan. In this case, measuring relates to team member's performance.
Quiet obviously; to measure team member's performance, it's important to know the work assigned to them as well as their performance on the assigned work. Hence Project Team Assignments and Team Performance Assessments are listed as input to this process. Some Organizations do have Template and procedures to do such assessment and that being the reason why Organization Process Asset is also one of the inputs to this process.
There are many Techniques for managing the team and the foremost is Observation and Conversation. The Project Manager watches what is going on and also specifically talks to team members to understand how things are. This does not mean looking at the formal Project Status Reports, but actually getting to know about the issues with informal interaction with the team before it gets documented in the project status reports. Knowing about the issue early helps in resolving the issue early too.
A formal Performance Appraisal of the team members are done to evaluate their performance on the Project. This is usually done by the Project Manager with help from the team supervisors. It's an established practice now to evaluate team members for their work and their future assignments, salary hike etc are also decided based on this appraisal report. Since the power of appraising lies with the Project Manager, Project Manager can use this as an effective tool for managing the team.
If so many people are working on a single project, its quiet natural to expect conflicts. Conflicts can happen because of various reasons. It's the Project Manager responsibility to ensure that conflicts get resolved. You can expect couple of questions on conflict management for sure in the exam, so I have dedicated a separate slide to explain that in more detail.
The output of managing a Project Team includes:
Corrective Action Recommendations like which team members needs to be changed, does some different kind of reward system needs to be implemented to motivate the team etc
Updating the Organization Process Asset database with some lessons learnt that can be used by upcoming projects.
