When it comes to listing extracurricular activities on your college application, quality is more important than quantity. You don't need to be captain of every team or president of every club. But at UMass Amherst, the admissions team wants to see that students are participating, practicing time management, and taking advantage of the opportunities around them. Activities like a part-time job or responsibilities at home are also important extracurriculars for many students and should be included in the college application.

So when it comes to extracurricular activities, what I look for in the application isn't so much about quantity. I don't want a student to necessarily think that they need to be the captain of every team, the president of every club. But we wanna see a student participating, practicing time management, we wanna know that when they come here they're gonna take advantage of all the resources that we have, the clubs and organizations, the student leadership opportunities.
So, if we see that you're starting that now and putting that into practice now, that's a great thing on the application. But there may be things that prevent you from doing so like working a part-time job, which is in extracurricular, or taking care of siblings, or having responsibilities at home. Just let us know what those things are on your application so that we know how you're balancing your time with your academics.
