Define Moment of Inertia

We can define the moment of inertia of a body about the given axis of rotation is the sum of the products of the masses of all the constituent particles and the square of the perpendicular distances of these particles from the axis of rotation. The moment of inertia of a body about the particular axis of rotation depends on the following factors:

(i) The moment of inertia depends on the position of the axis of rotation.

(ii) The moment of inertia depends on the orientation of the axis of rotation.

(iii) The moment of inertia depends on the shape of the body.

(iv) The moment of inertia depends on the size of the body.

(v) The moment of inertia depends on the distribution of mass of the body about the axis of rotation.
