ABOUT THE SONG

Nagendra Haraya is a popular sloka performed as an invocatory composition by many Indian Traditional Classical Dancers, especially Bharatanatyam, India’s foremost Indian Classical Dance Form. This composition refers to Lord Shiva – the God of Dance (Nataraja) who “He who has the king of snakes as his garland and who has three eyes, whose body is smeared with sacred ashes, who is eternal, pure with the four directions as his clothes.
Salutations to that Shiva, who is represented by the syllable na – ma – si – va – ya, therefore Nama Shivaya.

He is worshipped with water from the Mandakini river and smeared with sandal paste; he is the lord of Nandi and of the ghosts and goblins. He is like the newly risen sun causing the lotus-face of Gauri to blossom, destroyer of the sacrifice of Daksha. His throat is blue due to the poison he swallowed to protect the world. Respected by sages, Vasishtha, Agastya and Gautama, and also by the gods he has the moon, sun and fire as his three eyes.
Embodiment of yagna (sacrifice) and who has matted locks, and the trident in his hand.
Whoever recites this Panchakshara near Shiva, will attain the abode of Shiva and enjoy bliss and happiness.
