When you get your ECU flashed, one of the things that they recommend is to block off the AIS.  That is a system put in for smog or emissions...  You can block off the AIS system without block off plates, but I prefer the marble trick.  Its easier and cheaper and quick to reverse if you needed to for whatever reason...
