On January 26, 2023, SEBI released a report revealing that 9 out of 10 individual traders in the equity F&O market experienced overall losses from fiscal years 2019 to 2022.

SEBI's analysis indicates that 90% of individual traders in the F&O segment suffered losses, averaging around ₹1.1 lakh for the fiscal year 2022. Approximately 90% of active traders faced an average loss of ₹1.25 lakh.

SEBI's data, drawn from the top 10 brokers, highlighted a significant increase in individual traders in the F&O segment from 7.1 lakh in FY19 to 45.2 lakh in FY22. Among them, 88% were active traders consistently experiencing losses, and more than 80% of F&O traders were male.

But what are the implications of these losses on traders? Stress, debt and psychological problems. Every day there is some news of a trader committing suicide or killing family members.

Why? If they don’t have money to trade or invest they resort to loans from family and friends. Some invest their lifelong earning and when they suffer losses they go on a killing spree.

There are many instances which proves this.On 5 August, 2023 a man Veerarjuna Vijay from Andhra Pradesh, firstly killed his wife and 2 daughters and then killed himself too. When police don't find any proof of these killings, police submitted his laptop and mobile to the forensic team for investigation.

They found that Veerarjuna Vijay was trading for 1 year and he was in losses. He also took loans to invest in the stock market. Stock market also drove a Pune person to Suicide.

On 7 September 2023, 24 year old Nitin Chandrabhan Pardeshi killed himself due to losses in the Stock market. He was from Pune and didn't have any kind of employment and he was totally dependent on the Stock market for living. He was in deep losses and when he couldn't handle them, he killed himself.

Kerala Youth lost ₹2 crore in the Stock Market. On 1 March 2023, 32 years old Tessan Thomas killed himself by hanging from the ceiling. He left his job to make the stock market his full-time career. But he lost ₹2 Crores and this loss led him to depression and commit self killing.
