Run Away to Maine /Standard Baking Company/ Freeport, Maine/L.L. Bean/ Maine Beer Co./Wolfe's Neck

We begin our adventures today
We begin our adventures today in Portland, Maine at Standard Baking Company located at 75 Commercial Street. This is a family owned bakery offering all kinds of baked goods. The line gets long fast and they sell out daily so a pro tip is to go online, www.standardbakingco.com, and place your order the night before. This will insure that you get the items you desire and you won't have to wait in the mile long line!
After we got our oder, we headed to a small park across the street to enjoy our breakfast by the water. We ordered so many delicious things but my favorite was the chocolate brioche bun.
This park is also home to the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad. They were just getting the train ready for the first tour of the day while we were there. It costs $12.00 to ride. We did not ride the train but there as a very long line of people waiting to board and it was really cute! Maybe next time!!!
With breakfast in our belly we then headed north on Highway 1 to Freeport, Maine. On the way we kept seeing small islands. Intrigued by a causeway we spotted, we did drive to one to see what was out there. We found Mackworth Island State Park. It was a very small park and parking was full so we did not stay. It would be worth trying out early in the morning if you are looking for a good place to hike.
We then resumed our trip to Freeport. Freeport is a cute little town with a lot of shopping. It is also home to the L.L. Ben Flagship Store! It was huge!! There was a campus of stores with everything from pillows to plates to purses and even p.j.'s! We had a great time looking around! there were also many opportunities to see Maine wildlife in the stores. They had all kinds of aquariums with fish and many displays of stuffed animals native to Maine. It was a fun stop.
Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park was a recommended stop by our server at Back Bay Grill in Portland. This turned out to be one of our favorite stops. The area is beautiful. It was great for a little hike and wonderful for pictures!
On our way out of town we spotted a chocolate factory and had to stop! Sometimes these unexpected stops turn out to be hidden gems and this did not disappoint. Who doesn't like chocolate?! Wilbur's of Maine Chocolate Factory was great! This shop has it all! They make most of the chocolate on sight! You can tour the factory and see it being made!
We got an assortment of chocolates and tried them and well..... I'm glad this shop is in Maine because I would be a regular if it was close!!! The signature chocolate is the Mint Julep. They are located at 174 Lower Maine Street, Freeport, Maine, www.wilburs.com. It is worth the stop!
Maine Beer Company was our next stop because after chocolates everyone needs beer! Maine Beer Company is located at 525 US Route 1, Freeport, Maine- www.mainebeercompany.com. This was a busy place and the wait to get food was long. Mr. Karnes opted to do a beer flight. He tried four of their beers, a pilsner, pale ale, IPA and a Double IPA. The beer named MO, we thought for Missouri, was really named after the twins of the beer maker (first initials of each). Mr. Karnes also tried the IPA named Lunch and the Double IPA named Dinner! LOL Some unexpected guests sat down and struck up a conversation and our filming stopped. Mr. Karnes does give a run down of what he thought of the beers at our next stop, Cindy's Lobster Rolls, a small roadside lunch spot.
We were some of the last costumers of the season. Cindy's was closing that day. The lobster rolls and clam chowder we had were great! I would highly recommend trying her lobster rolls and the service was great! This seafood restaurant specializes in lobster and crabmeat rolls! She is located at 292 US 1, Freeport, Maine. They do not have a web page but they are on Face Book.
