Who plays the Larsen’s? This queenside fianchetto setup can actually be quite dangerous and is quickly becoming a popular surprise weapon by many strong players – in fact, Baduur Jobava used it to knock Chinese super talent GM Yu Yuangyi from the 2017 World Cup, and Hikaru Nakamura regularly plays it in blitz, both over the board and online. We like our recommendation 1…e5 because it both takes the center, and takes away White’s positional idea of f2-f4 with a grip on e5. Get comfortable with this opening for Black, and White cannot hope to get an advantage!
