How to make a display the main display in Windows 10 is what we look at in this video today.  Essentially we demonstrate how to change the primary monitor, step by step, how to allocate the additional external monitor/display as the main or primary display in your system using Windows 10.  This is part of a series of 'how to' videos where we share a bunch of simple yet useful, but often overlooked tips related to PC/Computer monitors and screens.

A Lenovo Ideapad laptop and JVC External monitor were used in this video.

The JVC monitor will be allocated as the main display using the Windows 10 system. By default, the Lenovo Ideapad is the main monitor initially - this is the case as in the absence of an external monitor, there has to be a main display on your machine.

Some people think that you need to make driver or cable changes to your machine, so you can change the primary displays, but that's not the case. It's just a few simple changes on your system that will make the difference.

Why would you want to make the larger JVC display the main display? Note that the primary or main monitor is the default monitor which everything is displayed on (generally) in Windows 10, e.g. programs, apps etc. - hence why it's key to determine which monitor is your primary / main monitor.

What appears on the main / primary display?

* The notification tray
* The lock screen, switch user, sign out and task manager screen
* When opening apps or programs for the first time, they generally open on the main display.

There may also be various personal reasons for wanting to make an larger external monitor the main display, including:

* People may prefer to work on a larger screen
* You're into gaming and want more screen space
* You do a lot of detailed work so a larger screen is beneficial
* Lots of cutting and pasting of information
* There could be many reasons.....

To allocate/change to a main display, as demonstrated in the video, follow these steps:

1. Right click anywhere on desktop
2. Select 'Display Settings' from list

You can identify which screen is which, by clicking the identify button.  In our case, when the display page opens, it shows the Lenovo Ideapad 320s PC/Computer as the main monitor and screen 1. The external JVC display, is monitor 2, shown on the left hand side, in display settings, as the secondary monitor, not currently the main display / screen

3. Click on the other monitor icon you want to change the main display to. It will be highlighted in blue

4. Scroll down the page to where it says 'multiple displays'. Under here, there is an option to 'make this my main display'.  Tick the box to implement this change.

You've just made your other display the main primary display!
