How to use GIÀ and ANCORA - Part 1
In this first part, we deal with the word GIÀ. It can take more than one meaning:

1. First of all, it may indicate a fact or an event accomplished at an earlier moment, hence with the meaning of "previously".

Examples:

The president has already spoken.

Maria has already returned from the trip.

As you may have noticed, when we use GIÀ with this meaning, the verbal tense is always past perfect and GIÀ is placed between the auxiliary and the past participle.

2. Expresses surprise at something that happened earlier than expected (usually with this meaning, we find it in exclamatory or interrogative phrases).

Examples:

- Today is December 25th!

- Are we already at Christmas? I remember the summer as if it were yesterday!

- Why are you stopping at the gas station?

- We've already run out of petrol!

3. It indicates a fact or a long-lasting event (in this sense, it has a slightly negative meaning). Normally, the time is indicated immediately afterwards.

Example:

It has been raining for a few hours and doen’t seem to stop.

4. It can also indicate an event that should have happened at a certain moment, but it didn't happen.

Example:

At this hour we should have already delivered the project, but we still have to start!

5. Finally, it expresses resignation (sincere or irony) for something said before, so it takes the meaning of "certo", "lo so".

Example:

- This exercise is very difficult! We will never succeed in doing it...

- Sure...
