The Manhattan Project

The Manhattan Project, the race to build the world's first atomic bomb, marked the era of atomic power. In 1938, the Germans had split the uranium atom and had learned of the tremendous power it released. On the verge of another world war, German scientists experimented with heavy water as a way to release the energy of the atom. The American government became concerned with the threat of a bomb unlike any other seen before and began their own program. Little did they know the threat would ultimately end up being them dropping two atom bombs on Japan, which would be forever remembered in history as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
