There is a lot of wild conjecture on what the causes of schizophrenia are in the comments. It is caused by a combination of genetics and environment working together, similar to other diseases that tend to run in families. Anything that is healthy for the brain, such as managing stress, social support, cognitive therapy, eating well (particularly getting lots of Omega 3 fatty acids) and exercising helps as well, but medical treatment with medications is almost always required to get and stay well.
