Masters, Ascended Masters, Secret Chiefs - Who and What Are They?

They go by many names - The Masters of Wisdom, the Great White Brotherhood, the Secret Chiefs, the White Lodge, sometimes known as the Ascended Masters. But who and what are these beings who purportedly direct human spiritual evolution from behind the scenes? Are they mere mortals with an extraordinary level of spiritual attainment?
