How to pronounce Chinese 3rd tone? Only when emphasising a word or saying a character individually is the 3rd tone pronounced like the graph in the video. In reality, it’s a flat sound as well as the lowest pitch you’re comfortable with. Has a croaky/creaky death rattle sound, NOT a falling-rising as many textbooks will teach you.
Don’t focus on the dip (symbol above the letter), or it’ll sound like the 4th tone, and don’t focus on the rise, or it’ll sound like a 2nd tone. Just keep it level. The angle is a lie!
