IAF high on Josh low on fighter jets Since its independence, India had fought many wars at several frontiers with China and Pakistan. Considering the two front war situations, the recommended and sanctioned fighter jet squadron strength for Indian Air force is 42. However, IAF will not be able to reach this number even in a decade timeline looking at the current pace of induction & development of fighter jet. At present Indian air force operates two squadrons of Rafale, 12 squadrons of SU 30 MKI, three squadrons of Mirage 2000, three squadrons of MiG-29, four squadrons of MiG 21 Bison which is now down to three as IAF’s 51 squadron based in Srinagar had been number plated on Friday. As per reports, the decommissioned 51 Squadron of Mig-21 will be replaced with MiG 29 UPGs. IAF also operates two LCA and six Jaguars squadrons. In summary, today IAF has total 31 squadron of fighter jets. Is 42 squadron a realistic number? Almost every person who keeps himself or herself updated on defense related news, knows that the IAF needs 42 squadron to counter two front war situations with Pakistan and China. But I have doubt on this numbers and will explain you why. The assessment of 42 squadron for IAF was done decades back when IAF was operating 3rd generation fighter jets. If you look at the 3rd generation fighter jets, they were developed for dedicated role. For example, Mig-21 was developed as an interceptor, Jagaur for ground attack & deep penetration strike and Mig-27 for close air support. Therefore, the number of squadrons proposed where higher as IAF need to maintain certain number of fighters for each role. With the induction of 4th and 4.5th generation fighter jet, the equation has changed. These jets are multi-role fighter and take on various types of roles, mission and operations. SU-30 MKI which forms the backbone of IAF with 12 squadron is 4th generation fighter which can perform air superiority role, take on ground attack missions, anti-ship roles & SEAD type of missions. Same goes with 2 squadron of Rafales. Therefore, I don’t think that IAF needs 42 squadron of fighter jets. Having said that, it does not mean that IAF is right sized at present. However, there is a need for new assessment considering the present and upcoming threat and technologies. ==========WHOMSOEVER IT MAY CONCERN============= Most of the pictures clip or BGM included in the Video Belongs to their Respected Owners and we do not claim rights.
