Although depression is discussed more now than it was 30 years ago, there is still room for improvement. To help support and encourage conversations and education surrounding depression, 10TV’s Tracy Townsend takes a closer look at the warning signs of depression as well as a drug-free treatment option called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Those who suffer from depression know that it is more than sadness. It is a debilitating disorder that disrupts parts of the brain affecting mood, sleep patterns and even appetite. It also disrupts lives.

Susan Lowe was 30 years old, working as a Columbus police detective, when she was diagnosed with depression. Her warning signs occurred at home, including inability to sleep as well as disinterest in seeing friends or answering the phone – and at work, where she would make frequent trips to the bathroom in order to prevent co-workers from seeing her cry.

After nearly three decades of side effect producing medications, Lowe gave transcranial magnetic stimulation a try. Also known as TMS, this non-invasive treatment for depression uses magnets to stimulate neurons in a specific region of the brain.

Lowe says that TMS treatment has improved her disorder to a point where she feels closest to her true personality, and it is because of this that she would like others to hear her story.

According to Dr. Megan Schabbing, the risk of medication-induced side effects and slipping back into depression are not uncommon, which make new treatment discoveries (like TMS) crucial.

Also crucial is knowing the difference between a bad day and depression. Warning signs to look for may include:
• Social withdrawal
• Texts or social posts about being suicidal
• Disinterest in activities that were once enjoyed
• Feelings of hopelessness

If you or a loved one is experiencing one or more of the above warning signs, it may be time to ask a doctor for help. Setting up an appointment with a primary care physician is recommended as a first step.
