Hello Guys and welcome to this weeks Math Puzzle.
Puzzles as you know, are a great way to start the day and get mind ticking.
Solving puzzles regularly will make you a more creative and persistent person.
And today’s puzzle is no ordinary one.
Shared on Facebook, it went viral with over 4 million comments.

So ladies and gentlemen, here it is, today’s puzzle :

1 + 4  =   5
2 + 5  = 12
3 + 6  =  21
8 + 11 =  ?

Now, can you guess the missing number?

Please pause the video and and give the problem a shot.
And don’t forget to return and check the solution.

Right, now lets see how we can tackle this problem.

Lets focus on this first line.
I am sure you can see a pattern and it looks easy 1 + 4 is 5.
So lets see if this logic applies to the next line.
2 + 5 is not 12.
But lets stick around and see if we can get to 12 in some other way.
Yes, we can, if we add the previous result to these numbers.
So 5 + 2 + 5 is indeed equal to 12.
Hmmm. But is this a pattern? Lets try this logic for the next line.
So we have 12 + 3 + 6 and that gives us 21.
Cool…
And by this logic the next result should be 21 + 8 + 11 which is 40.

This makes sense but I am not very confident of this answer.
My concern is that that 8 + 11 might not the next pattern.

Let me explain:

As you can see these 3 numbers are in sequence. Similarly these 3 numbers too form a sequence.
So I think the series could actually be like so:

1 + 4  =   5
2 + 5  = 12
3 + 6  =  21
4 + 7  =  ?
5 + 8  =  ?
6 + 9  =  ?
7 + 10 = ?
8 + 11 =

So basically 8 + 11 is part of the series but it comes much later.

But lets try out our logic to find the missing values

So this value here is 21 + 4 + 7 which gives us 32.
And so on…

And finally applying the same rule to our last line we get 77 + 8 + 11 which is 96.
96 took longer to arrive at but it certainly seems a more appropriate solution than 40.
But lets see if we can find another pattern. So lets look at our numbers again:
1 + 4  =   5
2 + 5  = 12
3 + 6  =  21
8 + 11 =  ?
The first result could also be arrived at using the following pattern
1 + ( 4 x 1 )
Similarly the second result which is 12 can also be arrived at by using the same pattern
2  + ( 5 x 2 )gmailyoNow why don’t you apply this pattern to the third line and see if it works?
It does, right?
So since we have a working pattern, let us apply it to the 4th line.
We get
8 + ( 11 x 8 ) which gives us 96.
Voila, we have a match with our previous solution.
The nice thing about this pattern is the fact that it does not rely in other lines but is self sufficient.
So guys, if you have other solutions to this problem, please mention them in the comments section.
