If ever there was a locomotive that summed up British Railways Engineering in a nutshell and would be instantly recognisable across the world of rail enthusiasm, the Class 55 Deltic encompasses all of those factors. Following the successful trials of the prototype Deltic between 1955 and 1961, the first Class 55's rolled onto the East Coast Mainline in 1961 and began an era of High Speed Diesel traction that would come to symbolise British Railways until their withdrawal in 1981 following the mass introduction of the Class 43 HST.

Today, only 6 complete locomotives survive in preservation along with the prototype and two cabs. As of the 13th December 2012, 5 of these locomotives are currently operational with 3 currently mainline registered. This compilation shows the Class 55's carrying out their spectacular work both on the mainline and in preservation:

1. Class 55 pioneer D9000 (55022) 'Royal Scot's Grey' makes a spectacular departure from Minehead during the West Somerset Railway Gala of the 16th June

2. On the 23rd June, 55022 is seen again racing south past Shaldon Bridge in Teignmouth with the 'Mazey Day Cornishman' from Birmingham International to Penzance

3. During the East Lancashire Railway's Deltic Gala of October 15th 2011, BR Green liveried Deltic number D9016 'Gordon Highlander' is seen pulling away from Bury Bolton Street with a morning train to Rawtenshall

4. Running light engine from its home in Bury to Edinburgh, 55022 is seen at Preston pulling away from a crew change on the 6th December

5. Back at the Deltic Gala, 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier' is seen pulling away from Bury Bolton Street with a southbound working to Heywood

6. Running under an amber light, 55022 is seen slowly passing Teignmouth with a returning tour from Paignton to Doncaster. On this day the locomotive had suffered a fire and had to be dragged to Paignton by 47804.

7. During the East Lancs Diesel Gala of the 13th October, 55022 is seen flying out of Nutall Tunnel with a service from Rawtensall to Heywood

8. Western Region power meets Eastern Region power at Blue Anchor during the West Somerset Mixed Traction Gala as 55022 arrives with a service to Minehead whilst Class 42 Warship D832 'Onslaught' and Class 35 Hymek D7017 await departure towards Bishop's Lydeard

9. Back at Summerseat, D9016 leads a train away in spectacular form with a service to Rawtensall

10. And finally, we get some real power as then recently reinstated 55002 'Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' and 55022 'Royal Scot's Grey' depart double headed from Bury Bolton Street with a service to Rawtensall.

Enjoy!!
