Chechen rebels have claimed they've staged a successful counterattack against Russian troops in central Chechnya.

The rebels alleged that in a course of battle for the town and railroad junction of Chervlyonnaya located 25 kilometres to the north of the regional capital of Grozny they repelled the Russian troops and inflicted heavy casualties.

Meanwhile, according to ITAR-TASS news agency, the Russian commanders stressed  that no fighting took place in the area recently and all towns on the left bank of Terek river are firmly in the hands of Russian troops.

No independent confirmation of either claim could be made.
