Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are commonly used medicines that help relax the veins and arteries to lower blood pressure. ACE inhibitors prevent an enzyme in the body from producing angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels. This narrowing can cause high blood pressure and forces the heart to work harder. Angiotensin II also releases hormones that raise blood pressure. This class of medicine is also used in those who have weakening of the heart muscle (as seen with congestive heart failure) and has benefits in patients with kidney disease and diabetes. Here Prof Barlis introduces what these medicines are.
