Storyline behind video:
As a family, we spend a fair bit of our time boating with approximately 60-70 nights a year are spent on the water. There has always been a focus on responsibility and safety. While at anchor, the kids head out the back of the boat like many kids might go out into the back yard of a large property. If possible, they swim or take a kayak, paddle board, dinghy and explore the water, the shore or whichever becomes the object of interest. This principle has always been at the heart of the value proposition with boating for our entire family and probably most boaters in general. As kids get older, we the parents have to teach and let them be allowed to exercise their own decision making skills without setting them up for failure.
Over the years Hunter has demonstrated good judgement. From time-to-time we have had to limit or altogether block his usage because of an isolated event such as a lack of attention. However, Hunter has strongly showed safe operation and we have been complemented many times by total strangers at anchorages who have noticed his careful operation.
By seven years old we found him a little 1990s vintage 3HP Yamaha outboard.
By spring of 2020, the little 8 foot row boat was becoming too small and an unofficial search for a larger dinghy had begun. Around that time a graceful offer of a used ten foot fibreglass hull in trade for the 3HP Yamaha outboard was offered and accepted.
One day while looking online (Craigslist or similar) Kelly spotted a late 2000s vintage 8HP Yamaha 2 stroke outboard for $350. A call was placed immediately and we were lucky enough to be the first call and opportunity to purchase.
A number of dinghy refit project were completed over the off season.
* Good ablative bottom paint.
* Improvement to the hull to increase stability and porpoising - added smart tabs.
* Automatic bilge pump.
* A depth sounder/fish finder.
* Full service on Hunter's outboard.
* A small solar charging power system.
The day had finally come to return Hunter's boat back to the marina. The plan had been hatched that we would launch Hunter's dinghy at the boat ramp in Sidney and then Makena and Hunter would reposition the dinghy to the marina at Tsehum harbour. We would meet them by going there in the truck. We would monitor their position by GPS transponder and Makena had a cell phone in a waterproof pelican case. The weather was perfect, and a quiet weeknight early evening with no wind and a smooth sea state. This quickly seem to morph into who would get to the marina first.
Coming back to the first question; can a 10 year boy be trusted to own and operate his own boat in a responsible manner?
For us, absolutely!
But it does require teaching, monitoring, evaluation and discipline.
It cannot be generalized and each instance should be looked at on its own merit.
