Three distinct subspecies of giant squirrels can be found living in suitable habitats all throughout the island.  The subspecies of the dry zone have grizzled grey or brown upper parts with a severely frosted tail, whereas the subspecies of the wet zone and highlands have blackish brown to jet black above with a completely black or "frosted with white" tail. They always reside in forests or in nearby communities with some trees; they are diurnal and arboreal. Its food consists of leaves, bark, and tender tree twigs and shoots, as well as seasonal wild fruits, berries, and nuts. Its diet is also known to contain insects, grubs, and occasionally bird eggs. Using tiny branches and twigs, they construct their nests amid the branches of towering trees inside the boundaries of their territory, which is marked by a single or a pair of squirrels. Typically, they construct three to four nests, which they utilize for both sleeping and raising their young.
