Happy Earth Day My Friends!

This week I am taking you on an afternoon of thrifting for fabric. If you aren't familiar with the phrase thrifting, please allow me to help! This is when you are going shopping at a thrift store. I prefer to go with an open mind and see what I can find at the thrift store, but have a general idea of what I need. Today we are going for fabric.

One of the reasons I love using  upcycled fabric from thrift stores is it is less intimidating. I spent $14 for 3 silk curtain panels lined in cotton poly blend. If something I am trying does not work out there is less financial investment in that fabric. For me this was important because I have some new projects I want to do in new time periods and it was much easier to fearlessly run forward when I have something I can make a wearable mock up in. For example: 18th century projects.

Thrift stores will often have vintage sewing notions, patterns, clothes you can alter, fabric yardage, or housewares you can upcycle. By purchasing fabric and materials here you are also helping to keep items out of the landfill which is best for the environment. This video wont necessarily go into a detailed discussion  about over consumption and its impact on the environment, but it is something to keep in mind as you source supplies for your projects.

I stopped at 4 stores in total 2 from a local chain in Colorado, and to from a national chain here in the USA. I've noticed that the more local the thrift store is the more unique your finds tend to be so be sure to give them a whirl. Not every trip to a Thrift Store will give you the fabric you are looking for, but it is a good place to start if you are open to different colors and patterns. Of the 4 stores I went to 2 of them had fabric that would be useful for my projects. A 3rd store did have some awesome books and a fun hat when I stopped in though. As a disclaimer, I was not paid or otherwise influenced to make this video by any of the places I shopped.

Do you shop at thrift stores or charity shops for your supplies, even occasionally? What is the coolest thing you have found for your costuming?

Bisou Bisou,
Maridith
