Luxor, cite of the ancient city of Thebes is home to two-thirds of the world's ancient monuments. Inspired by sights like Valley of the Kings and the memorial temple of Ramesses III, thousands of tourists come to Luxor every year. But there is one dark stain in Luxor's rich history of international tourism. For one Swiss family, a 1997 holiday in the Land of the Pharaohs came to an abrupt and tragic end when six gunmen opened fire at the temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Among the sixty-two tourists who lost their liveson that November day was one Swiss family that saw three generations perish in a single morning. The massacre, which effectively ended Egyt's tourism industry for nearly half a year led to many questions. Questions of the effectiveness of the Egyptian investigation that was sending wrong bodies to distraught families and questions of the motivation behind the attack. Was the massacre a religious statement or a political one against the unpopular regime of then Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak?
