Beware, The Blob from 1972 was not a true sequel to the first film but did play on the original film's premise. In this version, a strange frozen material was found buried in the permafrost somewhere near the North Pole (where the Blob was dropped in the original film) by a construction team building an oil pipeline. The character 'Chester' stores a sample of it in a thermos-like container and brings it back home for a lab to study. Before taking the sample to a lab to be analyzed, Chester (Godfrey Cambridge), stores it in his home freezer but was unwittingly thawed out by his wife when she set it on the counter while going through the freezer. The Blob quickly thaws out and begins its rampage by first consuming a fly, then a cute kitten, Chester's wife and eventually Chester (while he's literally watching the original 1958 Blob on his TV set, oddly enough). In the 1958 version, the blob's epic feast took place in a movie theater. The 1972 version has the blob making its main course in a bowling alley. It was eventually discovered to have a weakness to cold and is eventually frozen when it goes atop a ice skating rink where it was lured. (if only someone else had seen the '58 version they would have known this - duh!) While the film hints at being a sequel, we know it isn't since Chester is watching the original film on television, however, the film went ahead and had the blob frozen near the North Pole where it was dropped in the original film. It's just best not to rationalize because it makes no real sense. "Son of Blob" (1972) was directed by Larry Hagman (that very same Hagman of Dallas) and was known under a few titles that includes, "The Blob Returns", "The Blob Returns", "Beware! The Blob" and "Son of the Blob". The film starred Robert Walker, Jr., Carol Lynley, Godfrey Cambridge, Gwynne Gilford, Richard Stahl, Richard Webb, Marlene Clark, Gerrit Graham, J. J. Johnston, and Danny Goldman, Larry Hagman made a cameo appearance as a hobo along side the famous actor Burgess Meredith. Oddly enough, Burgess Meredith wasn't mentioned in the credits.
