Metal Spokes vs. Berd Rope Spokes | Bicycle Wheel Impact Test!

This is the UCI impact test. The UCI criteria for passing is 40 J. A weight is dropped on the wheels at increasing heights until the rim fails. These rims have been tested extensively, hint hint they’re new and coming soon! These new 27 mm internal rims in the video are identical with the exception of the spokes.

Berd spokes have an increased radial compliance compared to metal spokes, so they better absorb impacts to prevent rim damage. The failure energy is 116 J with Berd spokes and 101 J with metal spokes. The increased radial compliance and flexibility of Berd spokes also lead to a smoother ride and prevents long term fatigue of the spokes and rim.
