The film of journalist Maryana
The film of journalist Maryana Pietsukh "(Not) Strangers" raises issues of adaptation of forcibly displaced persons and the negative impact of stereotypes about people from different regions of Ukraine.
Also, "(Not) Strangers" is a poignant pre-Christmas story, where refugee children prepare for the holiday by learning new carols and traditions of the Boykiv region.
This is the story of two families – from Kherson and Donetsk region – who hid in the mountains from shelling, but not everyone was able to feel at home here.
"We went prepared that here we should greet people with "Glory to Jesus Christ!", Olena from Kherson tells with irony about her temporary move to a mountain village in the Lviv region. She is surprised and somewhat annoyed by the questions from the locals in her direction: did they go to church before, how do they know the Ukrainian language so well, and do they sing Christmas carols. She says that she feels like a "stranger among her own" here.
"For them, we are not very Ukrainian," says her son, 13-year-old Myron, who also felt a special attitude towards the refugees.
His mother tells about a 9-year-old boy from Crimea, who was running away from the Russians for the second time, the last time from occupied Skadovsk, and who was bullied in another town until he wanted to throw himself out of a window.
Local people explain the peculiarities: in this region, even those born here can be called "Zaida" or outsiders if one of the parents is not local.
At the same time, Antonina from Donetsk region is very satisfied with her experience staying here with her three grandchildren. She is impressed that bicycles left under the shop are not stolen here, people like Mass and have patriotic education in kindergartens and schools. She says that she has already bought embroidered clothes for her grandchildren, taught them to greet people with "Glory to Jesus Christ!" and constantly trains them to speak Ukrainian. So she is sure that in the village she is already "perceived as one of their own". So, together with her grandchildren, she would prefer to stay here as long as possible, she is even thinking about buying a house.
Olena and her family, on the other hand, live in anticipation of returning home as soon as possible. Although he understands that "this hope kills" and prevents adaptation and development.
