La Palatine: Elisabeth Charlotte, Princess of the Palatinate, called Liselotte of the Palatinate (born May 27, 1652 in Heidelberg, died December 8, 1722 in Saint-Cloud near Paris), was the Duchess of Orléans and sister-in-law of King Louis XIV of France. In 1671 she married Duc Philippe D’Orléans, the only brother of the "Sun King”. After the death of Louis XIV in 1715, her son Philippe II D’Orléans became regent of France until 1723. Although she only had two surviving children, she became not only the ancestral mother of the House of Orléans, but also the ancestral mother of numerous European royal families. Through her daughter, Elisabeth Charlotte D’Orléans, she was the grandmother of, among others, The French Queen Marie Antoinette. La Palatine is most famous for the correspondence between her and her aunt Sophia, which provide an extremely detailed report of the daily life at the court of Versailles. The approximately 60.000 letters of La Palatine were published as early as the eighteenth century, and still contain a wealth of information for historians today.
