Planting Buffalo Grass in The Poo Prairie

This is my second attempt at planting buffalo grass (Bouteloua dactyloides) here on Planet Mojo, and this time I believe it will work just fine. The first time, I neglected to plant a sample, so I had no idea what the baby grass would look like. A week or-so after planting, grass came up on the entire area that I planted — so I moved onto other things. By the time I realized that the grass I was seeing was foxtail, it was already too late!

This time I have killed back the weeds/foxtail twice and have raked-in my buffalo grass seed, and am well aware that it will be about a month before it sprouts. I also have a sample, and know that it is a much finer grass than foxtail, and grows nowhere near as fast. I will pluck-out the foxtail here and there, and either weed whack above the tops of the buffalo grass or use a herbicide that kills foxtail but not buffalo grass.

Like other prairie grasses, buffalo grass takes three years to become well established, and it could be five years until I have a dense monoculture stand, but that's OK, it will look better with every day, so I have that to look forward to! 😊
