In this video tutorial, Joshua Casper will show you how to get started with a number of RX 10's new features including the new speech to text feature, searching for words, selecting one speaker at a time, the updated and using the improved Spectral Recovery tool to synthesise lost frequency information for a voice recorded over zoom, taming harsh sibilance with spectral De-Essing and much more.
iZotope’s RX 10 Advanced has a game changing new feature!
It can listen to dialogue audio and not only transcribe the speech to text, but it will also denote different speakers. Which means you can select all of the dialogue from just one speaker at a time and use RX's other powerful restoration tools to correct and restore just their dialogue. You can also search for words, copy and past words and so much more and I'm going to show you how.
I want you to think about all the podcasts you listen to and how many of them are remote with the guest calling in over Zoom or something. It's so painfully obvious that's what's happening, because of the difference in quality between the two audio sources.... and sometimes it's even distracting to listen to because the audio sounds so bad!
Let's check out an example of a quick chat I had with my friend Kilian online.
Now, as soon as I loaded this into RX 10 Advanced it begins transcribing the speech.
Now, if I want to see the word lanes, I can click this button here in the lower left-hand side of the window. You will now see hear at the top of the spectrum analyser we have some words. Some are green and some are yellow. These are the two speakers.
If we zoom in, we can see that these can go down to word-by-word.
If the transcription is incorrect, you can literally just change it by double click in the tab and typing in the correction.
If you notice too many mistakes, or you want to rescan for some other reason you can right-click at the top and rescan the word lane.
Just looking you can see that Kilian's audio is missing all sorts of frequency or spectral information at the high end of the spectrum. This is a pretty normal occurrence for our remote podcast scenario though I've exaggerated it here.
We are going to use RX 10's improved Spectral Recovery tool to literally synthesis that missing information to make Kilian's voice sound fuller and more natural.
But, first we need to select when he speaks and only when he speaks. If you imagine this is an hour-long podcast, that would take forever to go in and manually make those selections, but now, we can just hit this button here for the text navigation window.
Right here at the bottom we can see how many speakers there are, RX 10 can currently distinguish between up-to 8 different speakers!
I can rename these to make things easier. Just double-clicking and typing in our names.
Now, while I was doing that, you may have noticed that clicking either of these once selects all of that speaker’s dialogue takes!
This, this is what I'm talking about!
You can also search for a word as well, which might help if you are looking for timestamps for highlights or clips!
So, let's click on Kilian to select all his dialogue. Now, slide over to the Spectral Recovery Module.
This has been updated and reworked. It's incredibly powerful. First, I will click learn so it can tell me where I might want to synthesis frequencies. I will take its recommendations and hit render.
However, it's a bit harsh in the high end, so what I'm going to do is go back to the initial state and reduce the gain on the high end by -8.
Again, before and after.
Let's go a bit further. The sibilant bits are still a bit harsh, so I am going to pull up the De-Esser module and choose the "Darken Vocal Sibilance" preset and reduce the Threshold by quite a bit.
Now it’s even better. That's a huge difference. We went from distracting to listenable in literally minutes.
And, of course, this is only scratching the surface of what's possible with RX 10 Advanced!
There are a bunch more features that are new and improved in RX 10 – like the completely reworked and upgrade Repair Assistant, now with processing chain access and a new better looking interface for example – and hopefully I will get a chance to do some more videos on that and everything else, but either way, I wanted to let you know that I will be doing a RX 10 livestream with an iZotope team member on this YouTube channel real soon!
