'Friday the 13th: The Game' is a big hit with gamers and horror heads everywhere. But 'Friday the 13th' is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to movie maniacs murdering their way onto our game consoles. Spanning from the Atari 2600 to the modern era, games based on slasher movies have been part of the medium since nearly the beginning. So strap on your hockey masks and sharpen your machetes, because we’re taking you on a peaceful camping trip through the history of slasher games.
From the 2600’s ‘Halloween’ game and ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ game to the 'Friday the 13th' NES game and 'Nightmare on Elm Street' NES game, we’ll show you the humble 8-bit origins of killers like Michael Myers, Leatherface, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. Game systems didn’t have the guts to render the bloodshed of these classic horror franchises, but with today’s technology slasher games almost look better than the real deals. 'Until Dawn,' 'Dead by Daylight' and, of course, 'Friday the 13th: The Game' are some of the greatest gory games in recent memory, and hopefully they’ll bring about ever scarier developments in the history of slasher games.
