Just 22 years after Carthage had lost against Rome in the First Punic War, the two great powers of the Ancient Mediterranean were fighting again. It was up to Hannibal Barca, whose father had negotiated the peace treaty at the end of the First Punic War, to show the Romans what Carthaginians and their elephants were made of.
So in what is definitely one of history's most epic stories, he crossed the high western alps with a massive army, to surprisingly push into Rome's heartland.
