Ninja and Yolandia Visser, real names Watkin Tudor Jones and Anri Du Toit are the duo better known as Die Antwoord, a south african music duo creating music in the “zef” counterculture. Their name directly translates to “the answer” from afrikaans, but it seems that this group creates more questions than anything. The duo have been fraught with controversy, and in 2023, the snowball of these allegations coming out seems to keep growing…

Before I continue it’s important to address that all of this information is alleged, nothing is proven in a court of law and is a series of multiple allegations. I’m going to do my best to bring to light these allegations, but remember that they are just that - allegations. With that being said…

Kicking off the allegations levied against Die Antwoord is the first time they found themselves in real trouble. In 2019 a video from 2012 would surface, following a fight the duo had with a man by the name of Andy Butler. Andy is an openly gay music producer, creating music for his group, Hercules and Love Affair. The video follows the duo pursuing Butler through a small wooded area of a festival, calling him homophobic slurs and spitting on him before starting a scuffle. Andy gets away from this fight and Yolandi has been laughing the whole time, even exclaiming during the fight “F-words fighting, that’s so cute”. This is when things take a real confusing turn. As the camera pans back to Yolandi, still laughing, Ninja shushes her and tells a story to the camera of Andy s*xually assaulting Yolandi. The pair then approach festival security and recount the tale of Andy assaulting Yolandi, before walking away as Ninja praises her “oscar winning performance” in front of the security guards. This, by all means does not look good for Die Antwoord, given the homophobic abuse, assault and subsequent claims of a s*xual assault. Ninja claims that the “oscar winning performance” shouldn’t be used to discredit their claims, and he claims that the acting was purely to make sure they didn’t get detained after their fight. Die Antwoord also claim that their previous cameraman Ben Jay Crossman was actually responsible for doctoring the video, as he was the one filming and distributing it - but we’ll get back to him later. Alongside this they made claims that Andy had harassed them in the days leading up to the fight and that it was not an entirely unprompted encounter. IT does seem like the duo are the antagonists, following Andy after their initial confrontation - and this conflict resulted in the duo being taken off the lineup for several festivals they were supposed to be performing at.

That would not come close to the scandals Die Antwoord would find themselves in however, as this was just the tip of the iceberg…

In June of this year, Danny Brown came out with his story while on the Tom Segura podcast 2 bears 1 cave, detailing how Ninja of Die Antwoord pursued him in a Paris nightclub and made many overtly s*xual advances. Danny didn’t reciprocate, and left the club that night, but Ninja continued to pursue. Ninja messaged Danny telling him he was coming to his show, and telling him “I’ll find you” when Danny asked if he wanted to be on the guest list. While Danny was performing Ninja crowd surfed on stage to see him and later invited him to a party where he continued his s*xual advances on Danny. After the night he reiterated to Danny, “don’t worry, I’ll find you”. Danny clearly was not interested in his advances.

While Danny speaks about his experience in a relatively light hearted way, while affirming the seriousness of the situation, there are two more people who have detailed their experiences with Ninja’s unwanted sexual contact, and detail their own traumatic stories.

In 2019 Zheani Sparkes released a diss track titled “the question”. The question, while a diss track in and of itself, works as an expose for the horrific comments made by Ninja alongside detailing in gruesome detail a s*xual assault at the hands of the same man. The song opens with the line “You said you f--king picked me 'Cause I looked like your daughter, Sixteen”, alongside images of text messages between the two where Ninja asks (read texts). It’s important to note that not only is this notion disturbing from the fact that he is attempting to relate a sexual partner to his daughter, but that she was only 8 years old at the time these messages were sent.
