Welcome to mind your body. I'm Stephanie Stephens today; we're going to talk about teeth for baby boomers with Dr. Alina Krivitsky. She's an assistant clinical professor at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. She also practices in the Los Angeles area, and she's going to help us preserve our pearly whites or, I guess is baby boomer galls sometimes not so pearly whites; nice to have you here. It's a pleasure to be here with you, Stephanie as well thank you so much for having thank you, and first of all, let's talk about periodontics. What exactly is that it's a big word. Periodontics is specific signs of supporting structures which are gums and bone, and the periodontist is a dental specialist who will take care of your gums and bone for you. So what are some of the most common problems that people deal with in this age group with their teeth. I mean, I think gum recession is one that I'm aware of, but I know you have a list; absolutely besides decay or caries or cavities, the second most common problem is periodontal disease or something we also call gum disease.

Now gum disease very different ranches starting from gingivitis which is the mildest condition is just swelling and reddening and bleeding of gums, which is caused by plaque or bacteria which is a film on the tooth. Which causes information with the guns this condition is totally reversible by professional and home care good home care. Now, if this condition is not taking care of, it can produce a more severe effect by a chronic inflammatory process. It can move down the route and start destroying with a body start destroying the supporting structures of the tooth, which are gums and bone. Obviously, as this advances, this disease is called periodontitis, so these two are very common. Another very common condition is gum recession, as you mentioned. Gum recession is the detraction of the guns from the tooth, exposing the root of the tooth. So they're moving back away from the tooth. Yes, exactly, they're moving back away from the tooth, exposing the roots. Where roots are much softer surfaces than enamel, they're less calcified, they're mineralized, so they're much more prone to caries. Unfortunately, because, like I mentioned previously, it's a very silent process, and most people don't notice that until they become sensitive to cold air, you have a cavity notice that their dentist. It's sometimes too late when you visit your doctor, and you can result in tooth loss as well.

So how would we know that we have periodontal disease, and what can we do to prevent a doctor. Now gum diseases are often silent, and they don't show any symptoms until very advanced stages. However, there are some basic signs that you can be aware of such as red swollen tender gums, bleeding gums during flossing and brushing persistent bad odor from teeth, or oral cavity gums receding, exposing your roots of the teeth and making teeth look longer, any kind of pus moving of teeth loosening of teeth. So these are definitely signs there is a risk assessment test online which anyone can take a www.perio.org, where you can evaluate yourself but what risk you are for periodontal disease.

We're all going to have brighter smiles, Dr. Krivitsky. Thanks for being here. Thank you so much it was a pleasure. Thank you for joining me here on mind your body, where we build a better boomer. I'm Stephanie Stephens.
