In 1917 begon Gerrit Rietveld
In 1917 begon Gerrit Rietveld een eigen meubelmakerij. Zijn zelfstandigheid leidde tot eigenzinnige ontwerpen, die waren gebaseerd op een analytische benadering van het meubel. Rietveld streefde ernaar om meubelen te ontwerpen die in massa gemaakt konden worden en die niet duur waren, zodat iedereen ze zou kunnen kopen.
De Steltmanstoel (1963) is het laatste meubelontwerp van Rietveld. Het ontwerp sluit meer aan bij zijn werk uit de jaren twintig dan bij zijn latere functionalistische ontwerpen. Rietveld ontwierp de stoel voor de sjieke juwelierszaak Steltman in Den Haag.
In de ‘Steltman’ komen de ideeën van Rietveld op een prachtige manier samen. De asymmetrische stoel, die vanuit elke hoek een verrassend beeld oplevert, is volledig opgebouwd uit lijnen en vlakken.
Van deze stoel is een miniatuurversie gemaakt van Amerikaans esdoorn (hard maple). De schaal is exact 1:6.

In 1917 Gerrit Rietveld started his own furniture-workshop. His independence led to quirky designs, which were based on an analytical approarch to the furniture. Rietveld strove to design furniture that could be made in bulk and which were not expensive, so that everyone could afford them.
The Steltman chair (1963) is the latest furniture by Rietveld. The design is closer to his work from the twenties than in his later functionalist designs. Rietveld designed the chair for the upscale jewelry store Steltman in The Hague.
The 'Steltman' the Rietveld ideas come together in a wonderful way. The asymmetrical seat which gives a surprising picture from any angle, is composed entirely of lines and planes.
From this seat is a miniature version made of American maple (hard maple). The scale is exactly 1: 6.
Miniature woodworking:
For the woodwork mainly Inca machines are used. (Circular saw and a planer, thicknesser)
The video shows in some six minutes how the chair is made including the necessary molds to put the scaled model perfectly together.
