(15 Mar 2022) China on Tuesday defended its stance on the Ukraine conflict as "completely objective, impartial and constructive."
At a daily news brieifing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said China was "deeply grieved" by the current situation in Ukraine and said it was committed to promoting peace talks.
"China's position and statement on the Ukraine issue is completely objective, impartial and constructive," Zhao said.
"We have a clear goal, that is to promote the de-escalation of the situation and end the conflict as soon as possible," he added.
Zhao also said a third batch of humanitarian aid sent by China for Ukraine arrived in Poland on Monday.
Beijing has refused to criticize Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, or even to refer to the conflict as a "war".
The comments came after U.S. adviser Jake Sullivan and senior Chinese foreign policy adviser Yang Jiechi met in Rome on Monday, with the Biden administration increasingly concerned that China is using the Ukraine war to advance Beijing's long-term interest in its competition with the United States.
Zhao also commented on the Iranian nuclear talks in Vienna, which were paused on Friday after Russia demanded relief from sanctions imposed over the invasion of Ukraine.
Zhao said China hoped the U.S. and Europe would consult with Russia to find a mutually acceptable solution.
Asked about the Philippines' protest over the "illegal incursion" of a Chinese navy ship into the country's waters, Zhao said the Chinese vessel was exercising the "right of innocent passage" under international law.
"China's passage was safe, normative and in accordance with international law and practice. We hope the relevant parties will look at it objectively and rationally," said Zhao.
