Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Genoa; 25th of June, 1990: Ireland and Romania play out a tense 0-0 draw after 90 minutes in the second round knock-out stage of the World Cup finals. The game goes into extra-time but both sides still fail to break the deadlock. As a result, the game has to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. Irish goalkeeper, Packie Bonner, finally saves the fifth Romanian penalty, taken by Daniel Timofte, before David O'Leary slots his and Ireland's fifth into the goal past Silviu Lung for Ireland to win the shoot-out 5-4. The Irish crowd and players erupt into emotional celebration as the historic result books Ireland's place in a quarter-final tie in Rome with host nation, Italy. But not before the Irish squad has an audience with Pope John Paul II in the Vatican.
