Find copies of Dracula by Bram Stoker on AbeBooks: http://bit.ly/r0OfBl The most famous example of Gothic fiction is Dracula by Bram Stoker. Dracula has influenced this genre, and many others, for more than 100 years and the story still has huge influence on popular culture from Halloween costumes to Hollywood movies. First printed in 1897, the book has been republished countless times over the years. The original edition was published by Archibald Constable & Company, and is famous for its yellow cloth bindings with red lettering. Dracula is the story of the vampire Count Dracula and his battles with Professor van Helsing. The story is told in epistolary format via a series of letters, diary entries and other documents. The narrative moves from the count's crumbing castle in Transylvania to England. The small North Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby has acquired unusual status as the place of the count's bloody entry. Although Stoker was not the first to write about vampires, he was the person to popularize vampires as an instrument of terror. Critics immediately recognized the book as a monumental piece of Gothic horror. Stoker had taken several years to European folklore and vampire stories before beginning to write the book. The book was initially embraced by stage productions and then Hollywood took over -- there have been more than 200 film adaptations of this novel. Today, vampires are still big business as Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series has shown but there'd probably be no Bella and Edward without Bram and his count.
