Roger Federer (born 8 August 1981) is a Swiss professional tennis player. Many players and analysts have called him the greatest male tennis player of all time.[a] Federer turned professional in 1998 and was continuously ranked in the top 10 from October 2002 to November 2016. He is currently ranked world No. 4 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
Federer has won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, the most in history for a male tennis player, and held the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for a record total of 302 weeks. Federer was born at the Basel Cantonal Hospital in Basel, Switzerland.His father, Robert Federer, is Swiss, from Berneck, near the borders between Switzerland, Austria and Germany; and his mother, Lynette Federer (born Durand), from Kempton Park, Gauteng, is a South African whose ancestors were Dutch and French Huguenots.Federer has one sibling, his older sister Diana, who is the mother of a set of twins.
