Video showing the Heathkit model CG-1197 digital shelf clock with the optional GCA-1195-1 Westminster chimes accessory sound board which adds "Big Ben" chimes and an authentic "tic-toc" sound.
This digital clock kit was sold by Heath Company of Benton Harbor, Michigan, from around 1976 to around 1986.
The clock features 3.25” (108mm) tall digits illuminated by #56 miniature Sylvania 33831 incandescent lamps into seven-segment “light-pipe” digital displays. It is controlled by a National Semiconductor MM5316 digital clock MOS integrated circuit chip.
The GC-1197 digital shelf clock measures about 6.5" H x 12.5" W x 6.25" D (16.5cm H x 31.75cm W x 15.9cm D).
There is also a model GC-1195 digital floor clock version which includes a 60” (152cm) tall bookshelf with the clock located at the top.
The GCA-1195-1 Westminster chimes sound board adds authentic “Big Ben” chimes with the use of a Mostek MK50240 Top-Octave Frequency Generator synthesizer chip which is found in many electronic organs like the Hammond and Lowrey. The clock will chime 4-notes on the quarter hour, 8-notes on the half hour, 12-notes on the three-quarter hour, and a 16-note passage with hour annunciation on the hour. The chimes sound board also adds an authentic "tic-toc" sound. There are Chimes Volume, Chimes Pitch, Chimes Sustain and Tic-Toc Volume controls on the back panel.
1976 Costs:
GC-1195 Floor Clock: $140 USD (with inflation about $660 USD in 2021).
GC-1197 Shelf Clock: $90 USD (with inflation about $425 USD in 2021).
GCA-1195-1 Westminster Chimes: $70 USD (with inflation about $330 USD in 2021).
I built the clock in this video in 1977 and it has been in continuous service with only the replacement of burnt out incandescent lamps and the electrolytic capacitors when they failed. The incandescent lamps were replaced about January 2013 with high brightness diffused (milky) white 5mm LEDs.
