PCRI's Alex and Dr. Mark Scholz discuss chemotherapy for prostate cancer and compare the two most commonly used, Taxotere and Jevtana.

0:06 In your practice, do you use Taxotere or Jevtana more frequently?  Taxotere and Jevtana have the same efficacy and there is evidence that Jevtana has fewer side effects, but Taxotere is more commonly used because it is cheaper and insurance companies will oftentimes only cover Jevtana if Taxotere has already been used.

1:07 How do the side effects of Taxotere and Jevtana compare?  They are similar, but Jevtana seems to have less fatigue and hair loss.

1:46 Why do chemotherapy patients wear ice caps and put their fingers on ice?  Patients do this to minimize the effects of chemotherapy on their hair and fingernails by shunting blood away from those areas.

2:50 Do you use any other forms of chemotherapy?  Carboplatin, a medicine that is FDA-approved for lung cancer, has shown benefit in prostate cancer and is most effective when it is given alongside Taxotere or Jevtana.
